Autographer: Autonomous Robot Photographer Deployed at AAAI/IAAI 2003
In 2003, Selene Mota and Rosalind Picard at the MIT Media Lab deployed an autonomous mobile robot called Autographer at IAAI 2003. Over five days it navigated a conference environment, interacted with roughly 5,000 people, and captured more than 3,000 photographs, 35% of which recipients requested by email.

Background
Mobile robots in the early 2000s were mostly confined to labs or to environments that had been carefully prepared for them. Industrial robots followed fixed paths. Research platforms could map a room and move around obstacles, but sustained operation in a crowded, unpredictable space was a different problem entirely. People move without warning, form groups, disperse, and behave in ways that are hard to model in advance.
Photography added another layer of difficulty. A camera mounted on a static wall captures whatever passes in front of it. A robot that photographs people has to decide where to go, when to point a camera, and how to respond when someone approaches. Those decisions have to happen continuously, without a person at the controls.
At the time, most work on socially situated robots focused on short demonstrations or tightly controlled scenarios. Letting a robot loose in a large public gathering for days at a time, and doing it as part of a live conference, was not the kind of thing that happened often.
What happened
In 2003, Selene Mota and Rosalind Picard at the MIT Media Lab built Autographer and brought it to the Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence conference, IAAI 2003, held in Acapulco, Mexico. The robot was built on an iRobot mobile platform and carried two digital cameras. It navigated the conference environment on its own, using computer vision and probabilistic methods to find its way and to identify moments worth photographing. No one drove it remotely. No scripted route told it where to go.
Over five days the robot ran for more than 40 hours. It moved through the conference, approached people, and took photographs. By the end of the deployment it had interacted with roughly 5,000 people and accumulated more than 3,000 photographs. Attendees could request copies by email, and 35% of the photographs were shared that way.
That email mechanism was not a minor detail. It meant the system was producing output that real people wanted enough to ask for, in real time, during a live event. The deployment gave Mota, Picard, and the wider research community something that lab experiments rarely produce: a large body of data on how people actually behave around an autonomous robot operating in their space, over an extended period, rather than for a few minutes in a controlled setting.
Why it mattered
Autographer demonstrated that a mobile robot could operate autonomously in dense, unstructured social environments for sustained periods, using computer vision and probabilistic navigation rather than scripted paths. The email-sharing mechanism produced an early real-world test of AI-mediated social photography at scale. The deployment provided empirical data on human–robot interaction in public settings that informed subsequent work on socially situated robots.
