Background

By the late 2000s, computers had become very good at narrow question-answering tasks: given a tidy, well-formed question and a structured database, a system could retrieve a reliable answer. What they could not handle was the way human language actually behaves. Words carry multiple meanings. A clue might lean on wordplay, irony, or an oblique reference that only makes sense if you already know the answer is hiding behind a metaphor. Jeopardy!, where clues are given as statements and contestants must phrase their responses as questions, was built almost entirely from that kind of language.

The broader field of natural language processing had made steady progress through the 2000s, but most systems were tested on constrained problems with controlled vocabulary. Open-domain question answering, where a system must draw on knowledge spanning history, science, literature, sport and popular culture simultaneously, remained genuinely hard. Nothing had shown it could work at speed, under competition conditions, against people who were very good at it.

What happened

IBM Research began the Watson project around 2007 under David Ferrucci, who led the DeepQA team at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center. The goal was to build a system that could compete on Jeopardy! against strong human players. Rather than relying on a single method, DeepQA ran many different algorithms in parallel: it searched large bodies of text, generated candidate answers, and then scored each candidate using evidence gathered from multiple sources at once. The architecture was designed around the idea that no single approach would be reliable enough on its own, but that combining hundreds of them, and weighing their outputs carefully, could produce something that was.

The matches were recorded in January 2011. Watson was placed against Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, two of the strongest Jeopardy! players in the show’s history. Rutter had never lost to a human opponent in televised play. The episodes were broadcast across three nights in February 2011. Watson won. Jennings and Rutter both acknowledged the result directly; Jennings wrote at the bottom of his Final Jeopardy response that he, for one, welcomed their new computer overlords. Watson’s winnings across the match totalled $77,147, against Jennings’s $24,000 and Rutter’s $21,600.

What made this different from earlier question-answering demonstrations was the breadth and the format. Watson had no internet connection during play. It worked entirely from pre-loaded knowledge, and it had to buzz in faster than two human players who were themselves fast. The system was not right every time, and its occasional wrong answers, particularly on clues involving geography, drew attention to where the approach still fell short. But across the full match, it outperformed both opponents by a wide margin.

Why it mattered

Watson demonstrated at scale that a system combining information retrieval, knowledge representation, and natural-language processing could handle the lexical ambiguity, wordplay, and broad domain coverage required by Jeopardy!, well beyond the narrow question-answering tasks common in prior research. The project accelerated IBM's pivot toward applying machine-reading and knowledge-graph techniques to commercial domains, particularly healthcare and enterprise search. It also shifted public and institutional awareness of what natural-language systems could accomplish outside controlled laboratory conditions.
